People who lack flexibility are rigid, obstinate, and stubborn. They resist change and are unaccommodating in shifting environments.
An inflexible work environment destroys trust and commitment and drives away talent and prohibits innovation.
Enemies of Flexibility:
- Denial – There is a fine line between being optimistic and denying the need for change. Denying that a problem exists will paralyze the ability to be flexible.
- Habit – We are wired to follow routines. When a plan works for us, we resist change. Until the pain of remaining the same becomes greater than the pain of change, we will resist change.
- Short-Term Thinking – An inability to see the big picture and long-term goals will prevent us from seeing the need for flexibility and adaptation. Living moment by moment will leave us unprepared for the future.
