If you lack initiative, you may be unresponsive, passive, and slow to act, and you may appear indifferent and lazy.

Enemies of initiative:

  • Fear: Thoughts such as, “I am afraid of doing something without detailed instructions,” or, “What if I mess up?”  If you are fearful, taking the first step can help you defeat it.
  • Procrastination:  If we allow the prime time for action to pass, the job becomes more difficult or even impossible because we waited.
  • Daunting goals:  Allowing yourself to be overwhelmed when a goal requires a lot of time and effort.  Often, we will just decide not to do something because we feel we cannot accomplish the task at hand.

“Success is something you must achieve without someone telling you what to do or why you should do it.”  – Napoleon Hill
