People without discretion are careless and are negligent in communication and behavior.  They can be rash and sometimes harsh, and they generally handle information inappropriately.

Enemies of discretion:

  • Lack of accountability:  When we do not have anyone to give us feedback and correction, we may not be aware of our indiscretion.
  • Egotism:  Being overconfident and prideful can cause us to act and speak foolishly.
  • Drugs and alcohol:  Stimulants such as drugs and alcohol can impair people’s ability to make wise decisions.

People who lack discretion share information that should not be shared in order to make themselves look better, belittling others in the process.

If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” – James 1:5 (NIV)
