Fairness: Following the rules honestly and reasonably, valuing equality, treating everyone impartially and free of favoritism.
Respecting the perspective of others + making decisions based on truth and equality = fairness
Fair people give everyone the time and attention they deserve. They are charitable and tolerant, giving consideration, courtesy, and notice to each individual and situation.
Fairness Requires:
- INTELLECTUAL HUMILITY: Fairness will never consistently rule the day without an intellectual decision to humbly consider other perspectives and opinions as having equal merit as our own.
- INTELLECTUAL AUTONOMY: Fairness requires us to be willing to stand alone and to have a significant amount of autonomy in order to treat each individual fairly instead of the way our friends, family, company, or nation would prefer.
- INTELLECTUAL HONESTY: A person becomes fair by laying aside prejudices and biases and being completely honest about the situation and people involved, not letting relationships or preferences cloud their judgement.
“I speak to everyone in the same way, whether he is the garbage man or the president of the university.” – Albert Einstein
