Willingness to adapt and change + seeing a need and responding proactively = flexibility

Flexible leaders are easy to follow and often have people working with them who are willing to “run through a wall” for them.  They are optimistic and do not see an obstacle as the end, rather, the beginning of a new opportunity.

The enemies of flexibility are:

  • Denial.  Denying that a problem exists will paralyze the ability to be flexible.
  • Habit.  The old adage is true:  Until the pain of remaining the same becomes greater than the pain of change, we will resist change.  Change can be difficult, but sometimes it is just what we need.
  • Short-term thinking.  The inability to see the big picture and long-term goal will prevent us from seeing the need for flexibility and adaptation.
