Those lacking self-awareness do not understand their own strengths, weaknesses, and personalities. They have inaccurate perceptions of their responsibilities and the effects of their actions.
Enemies of self-awareness:
- Defensiveness– Feedback from others helps us to become more self-aware, but being defensive about constructive criticism prevents us from understanding our true selves.
- Assuming– We imagine we know what others think of us. Making assumptions instead of seeking the truth about how others see us fosters inaccurate perceptions of ourselves.
- Negative emotions– One of the chief obstacles to self-awareness is thinking negatively of ourselves. Constant negative emotions prevent us from understanding our character, motives, and emotions clearly.
